Qualcomm names Steve Mollenkopf CEO and president

Staff writer | San Diego, Ca., USA – Qualcomm Incorporated, a developer of wireless technologies, announced that Steve Mollenkopf was promoted to chief executive officer and appointed to its board of directors.[break]


Mr. Mollenkopf will continue to serve as the Company’s President. Effective March 4, 2014, following the Company’s 2014 Annual Meeting of Stockholders, Mr. Mollenkopf will become Chief Executive Officer.

In his nearly 20 years at Qualcomm, Mr. Mollenkopf has held a variety of leadership positions including leading the chipset business (QCT), successfully driving innovation and record growth. Under Mr. Mollenkopf, QCT completed the acquisition of Atheros, the Company’s largest acquisition to date, to accelerate the expansion of Qualcomm’s technologies and platforms beyond cellular.

Most recently Mr. Mollenkopf served as Qualcomm’s president and chief operating officer and as a member of the executive committee, helping to drive Qualcomm’s overall global strategy. Mr. Mollenkopf has played a critical role in the development of a number of new technologies, and has strengthened the Company’s relationships with key industry partners.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech and a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan.

On March 4, 2014, Paul E. Jacobs will assume the role of Executive Chairman.

In his role as Executive Chairman, Dr. Jacobs will remain an employee of the Company and will help guide its future strategies and direction. Following the completion of his Ph.D. in 1989 and a year as a post

In his role as Executive Chairman, Dr. Jacobs will remain an employee of the Company and will help guide its future strategies and direction. Following the completion of his Ph.D. in 1989 and a year as a post-doctoral researcher at a French government lab in Toulouse, Dr. Jacobs joined the Company fulltime in 1990 as a development engineer leading the mobile phone digital signal processor software team.

Five years later, Dr. Jacobs became vice president and general manager of the combined handset and integrated circuit division, which was subsequently divided into Qualcomm Consumer Products and QCT, respectively. Dr. Jacobs became CEO in July 2005 and was appointed chairman in 2009.

As an innovative leader of a broad range of technical teams within Qualcomm, Dr. Jacobs has been granted more than 45 patents for his inventions in the areas of wireless technology and devices.

Dr. Jacobs is chairman of the U.S.-Korea Business Council and of the Advisory Board of the University of California, Berkeley, College of Engineering; vice chairman and co-owner of the NBA Sacramento Kings; Global eHealth Foundation Ambassador; a member of the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum; and a member of the US-India CEO Forum.

Dr. Jacobs received his bachelor's (1984) and master's (1986) degrees, as well as his doctorate (1989) in electrical engineering, from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Jacobs is a recipient of a number of industry, academic and corporate leadership awards.
