Anglo American: Themba Mkhwanazi CEO of coal business, South Africa

Anglo AmericanMarch 6, 2014, Johannesburg, South Africa - Anglo American plc, a mining company, appoints Themba Mkhwanazi as the CEO of its coal business in South Africa, effective during the second quarter of 2014, following Godfrey Gomwe's decision to retire from Anglo American.
Mr. Mkhwanazi is currently Rio Tinto's Regional General Manager for the Americas, responsible for delivering technical and operational improvements across Rio Tinto's businesses in the region. Mr. Themba has held a number of senior roles within the resources industry, including as COO of Richards Bay Minerals, during which he was responsible for mining, smelting and processing operations. Prior to that, he was a Managing Director with the Huntsman Corporation in South Africa.

Mr. Gomwe joined Thermal Coal as CEO from 1 September 2012, having spent three years as executive director of Anglo American in South Africa where he was the companies key representative, working with the South African business units to deliver Anglo American’s strategy in the region.

Prior to that, he was head of group business development, Africa, and was formerly finance director and chief operating officer for Anglo American in South Africa. He has extensive experience across the group, having worked for a number of Anglo American businesses, and has an intimate knowledge of Anglo American’s operations, partners and other key stakeholders in Southern Africa. Mr. Gomwe is currently chairman of Anglo American’s enterprise development arm, Zimele and the Transformation Committee of Anglo American in South Africa.

He is a chartered accountant and holds a Masters degree in Business Leadership from the University of South Africa.
