The Ukrainian government plans to revive its river transport system to boost the country's logistic capabilities, the country's Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said.

"We can use our river transport potential to transport goods around the world. We need a new legislative framework as well as support for river fleets," Groysman was quoted as saying by the government press service.

The revival of the river transport routes and combining them with sea routes will invigorate many sectors of the Ukrainian economy, Groysman said, noting that the move will bring particular benefits to agriculture.

Over the past 20 years, Ukraine has reduced the volume of river freight traffic by 17-fold to 3 million tons, which accounts for less than one percent of total cargo transportation.
