Spain buys medical supplies from China for 432 million euros

Spain announced a purchase of health-care equipment from China for 432 million euros to fight the coronavirus in the country, where 3,434 people have already died from the pandemic.

Health Minister Salvador Illa explained that the contract signed with China includes the supply of 550 million masks, 5.5 million tests for rapid detection of the disease, 950 respirators and 11 million gloves.

Illa explained at a press conference that the intergovernmental agreement includes an agreement with three suppliers for supplying 550 million surgical masks and respiratory protection for professionals and patients in eight weeks.

The 5.5 million rapid diagnostic tests will be delivered by two suppliers during March and April, the 950 respirators will be supplied from April to June and the 11 million gloves in four weeks, he said.

'We have closed down entire production lines (in China) that will work entirely for the Spanish government,' said the Health Minister, who pointed out that all this medical supplies will arrive in stages from the end of this week.

With almost all of its 47 million inhabitants in confinement for the last 11 days, Spain today surpassed China as the second country in the world with the most deaths from SARS-Cov-2, the cause of Covid-19 disease, after Italy.
