German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said that there was no point speculating on what will be decided about shoring up Italy's struggling banks.

"One shouldn't speculate before the results of the stress tests of the European Banking Authority that will be made known on July 29, we know what the rules are for managing the difficulties of banks and that is the most important thing," he said.

The woes of Italian banks with their high levels of non-performing loans (NPLs) is not on the official agenda of today's Eurogroup meeting and tomorrow's ECOFIN, but it is sure to be discussed along with the case of ailing Deutsche Bank, observers said.
