Portugal asks for total suspension of construction on Almaraz nuclear waste plantStaff Writer | January 21, 2017
The Environment Ministry of Portugal has asked for all acts necessary for the construction of a nuclear waste plant in Almaraz, Spain, near the border with Portugal, to be suspended so the situation does not become irreversible.
Nuclear energy Portugal sent a complaint to Brussels
On Monday, the Environment Ministry said it had sent a complaint to Brussels regarding Spain’s decision to build a nuclear waste warehouse in Almaraz, without considering the trans-border consequences.
The Portuguese government believes the project breached European law as “cross-border impacts were not evaluated.”
Last week, during a meeting held on Thursday in Madrid between the Portuguese and Spanish environment Ministries, the Spanish government suggested that Portugal should carry out such studies.
This was refuted by the Portuguese government, which believes it is Spain’s responsibility. ■
