Philippine carriers will soon mount flights to South Africa after both countries forged their first air service agreement.

Cooperation in air   The countries agreed on seven flights per week
"We agreed on 7 flights per week for each side," Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) executive director Carmelo Arcilla said. "There are no current operators, as the market is still small."

Mr. Arcilla said South African Airlines has signified its interest to develop the market as part of its expansion in Asia. "The air services between the Philippines and South Africa would improve our aviation network and connect us to the emerging markets of Africa." He said the government is proposing direct connection with South Africa to promote tourism and trade between the two countries.

The Aquino administration is pursuing more air talks as part of its open skies policy, which aims to double tourist arrivals to 10 million by 2016.
