Ontario’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) said freshwater offshore wind is still in the “very early stage of development” and the moratorium will stay in place “until all the potential impacts are fully understood”.

MOECC said that it has conducted extensive research into offshore wind, which is an “ongoing process”.

It added that the 20.7MW Icebreaker freshwater project on Lake Erie “provides an excellent opportunity to better understand the impact of these developments on the Great Lakes”.
