Money first, Brexit talk later, says Merkel

Discussions about Britain's financial commitments to the European Union must come at the start of Brexit negotiations, Chancellor Angela Merkel said.

Speaking in the German parliament on Thursday, Merkel said that Britain would have to clarify "how it sees future relations" with the EU before official negotiations on its exit can begin.

The remaining 27 member states are set to hold a summit on Saturday with the aim of approving EU guidelines on the Brexit negotiations.
