Turkish transport minister, Ahmet Arslan, announced the immediate operation of the railway linking the capitals of Azerbaijan and Georgia to the Turkish city of Kars in the northeast of the country.

The first official train service will begin on October 30 from Baku and after passing through Tbilisi will arrive in Kars, with the presidents of Azerbaijan, Ali Aliyev; of Georgia, Giorgi Kvirikashvilig, and Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on board on the maiden voyage.

For Arslan, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) line will make history since with its entering into operation the railway connection between Beijing and London is completed, so that the project of the new Silk Road will expand new routes for transportation of goods.

The BTK 'will help boost the economy of the region and that the products reach the target markets,' by connecting China with Europe through the Caucasus with this railway line through the south of the two continents side, the minister said.

He explained that the line has an extension of 826 kilometers and will begin with a load capacity of 6.5 million tons per year, which can reach up to 50 million when international demand requires it.

With the completion of this link, the travel time between Asia and Europe will be reduced to 15 days, of the nearly two months that are currently required for freight transport.
