“To challenge the One China principle on the Taiwan issue is ... an act of international treachery,” China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, according to the foreign ministry.

The Czech Republic and Taiwan do not have formal diplomatic relations, as Prague abides by the One China policy that recognizes the regime in Beijing as the government of Taiwan.

Vystrčil is leading a 90-member delegation, which includes several senators, on a six-day trip to the island. Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu greeted the delegation on Sunday at the airport in Taipei.

Wang labeled the trip a "public provocation" and said Vystrčil “will pay a heavy price," without mentioning what that would be.
