360 Ramazan bazaars to be set up in Punjab

Under the package, flour bags will be available to the people at Ramazan bazaars and the open market at concessionary rates. About 360 Ramazan bazaars will be set up in Punjab while all model bazaars, Sahulat bazaars, Juma and Itwar bazaars will be converted into Ramazan bazaars.

Moreover, 334 fair price shops will be established in Ramazan bazaars where items of daily use would be available at wholesale prices. Stalls of the Utility Stores will also be established at the Ramazan bazaars.

The chief minister made the announcements while chairing a meeting here which reviewed the package. He said effective monitoring of Ramazan bazaars would be ensured for easy availability of quality essentials at cheaper rates during Ramazan, and provincial ministers, elected representatives, secretaries, commissioners and district coordination officers would perform duties.

The chief minister said the provincial cabinet committee could use his aircraft and helicopter for visiting far-flung areas. He said no compromise would be made on the quality of vegetables, fruits and essentials at Ramazan bazaars and political and administrative machinery would play an active role in ensuring supply of quality items in abundance.

Mr. Sharif said chicken and eggs would be available at the Ramazan bazaars at Rs15 cheaper than the market price. The chief minister directed that 2,000 Madni Dastarkhwan be set up in the province for providing the facility of free Sehri and Iftari to the people. He said philanthropists making arrangements for Madni Dastarkhwan will succeed in this world and the world hereafter. He said the Punjab government will extend all-out cooperation with regard to the Madni Dastarkhwan.

Shahbaz further directed that a survey of cold storages be conducted in the province and details of the stored items be collected. He also issued instructions for formulating a Cold Storage Act. He said the role of the cabinet committee is of vital importance regarding the quality, availability and prices of ghee, sugar, gram flour, gram pulse, dates and other necessary items at Ramazan bazaars and the cabinet committee should evolve an effective mechanism in this regard.

Mr. Sharif said coordination with the Utility Stores be maintained so that people could benefit from the Ramazan Package announced by the federal and Punjab governments. He directed the labour minister and secretary to ensure a correct weight and measures system in Ramazan bazaars and warned that stern action will be taken in case of any complaint in this regard.

The chief minister directed the Punjab Information Technology Board to formulate a digital system on the pattern of the dengue programme for monitoring Ramazan bazaars, while evolving an integrated mechanism for monitoring of these bazaars through CCTV cameras should also be considered.

The meeting was informed that the colour of atta bags to be supplied in Ramazan bazaars under the Ramazan Package of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif will be green while bags of Sasta atta in the open market will be of orange colour. It was further said that 13 new model bazaars being constructed in the Punjab will be made functional before Ramazan and converted into Ramazan bazaars.
