India to give free SIM cards for tourists on e-tourist visas

The Union Home Ministry has sanctioned a proposal to give SIM cards to anyone arriving in India on an e-tourist visa.

SIM card will be automatically be issued, along with a welcome packet that includes a certain talktime amount, “dos and don’ts” list, maps, and emergency contact information.

SIM cards will be issued through BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited), a state-owned telecommunications company.

The e-tourist visa scheme, which was launched on November 27, 2014, allows a foreign traveller to show only a printout of an authorisation mail to the immigration authorities.

This facility is currently available for citizens of 150 countries.
