Some 56 percent of the electricity generated in the South American country, according to figures released by the Uruguay XXI foreign trade and investment promotion agency last month, comes from renewable sources, or nearly six times the world average of 9.3 percent.

Uruguay currently has 800 MW of generating capacity from wind farms, with the figure expected to climb to 1,000 MW by the end of this year and 1,400 MW by the end of 2017, the UTE president said.

Biomass and solar power plants make up a smaller share of the energy mix in Uruguay, a country of 3.4 million people.
