Unprecedented tourism fall in Spain due to coronavirus

Spain has received 204,926 foreign tourists in June, a 97.7% fall from the same month in 2019, after the border closures to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

As in April and May, the arrival of international visitors in June was affected by the state of alarm imposed by the Government to stop the transmission of coronavirus, which expired on June 21.

As a consequence of this exceptional measure, which entered into force on March 14 with strict confinement, during April and May the number of foreign travelers was zero.

According to the National Statistics Institute, tourist spending in June registered a year onyear 98.6% drop, up to €133 million.

Such figures contrast with those of the same period in 2019, when 8.8 million haolidaymakers arrived in Spain, spending €9,696 million. During the first semester, the arrival of tourists decreased by 71.7% in the interannual rate, to nearly 10.8 million people, disbursing €11.84 billion, 70.6% less compared to the same period in 2019.
