"Ukraine's crisis hit us on two fronts. On the one hand, the market for our wines in the country has shrunk to almost nothing, and secondly - the hostilities closed the path of our bottles to our biggest market Russia. More than 10 trucks loaded with wine to Moscow disappeared in Ukraine," said Mr. Koev.

As a result, Bulgarian producers have to take a circuitous route through the Baltics. This, however, rises the price of the commodity and causes sales at a loss. Many Bulgarian producers instead prefer to keep their wine in the cellars and wait.

There are many unsold wine bottles from the old crop, said Mr. Koev.
