The highest court in the UK rejected an appeal by ministers against a High Court judgment which blocked their decision to begin the divorce from the European Union without a vote in Parliament.

Supreme Court justices ruled by a majority of eight to three that Prime Minister Theresa May cannot lawfully bypass MPs by using royal prerogative to begin negotiating the UK's exit.

Mrs May's timeline has always been to start negotiating with the EU by the end of March. Now, her Government will have to introduce a bill through Parliament to start the process.
