The goal was announced by Sustainable Aviation, a coalition of airlines, airports, and manufacturers working to cut emissions from the UK aviation industry.

The ambitious target can be achieved while growing passenger numbers by 70 per cent, by using more efficient planes, ramping up the use of sustainable biofuels, and buying carbon offsets, the industry claimed.

But it warned government support to subsidise the use of biofuel in planes, which is currently significantly more expensive than jet fuel, will be crucial.

The UK government will also have to help ensure UN-led efforts to offset global flight emissions go ahead, and that the global industry sets a "clear, long-term target" for CO2 emissions, it added.
