OlivesSpain's Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Canete, has announced it will ask the European Commission to include olive oil and table olives in the European program of free distribution of fruit and vegetables.

This is an initiative to which the EU has budgeted 150 million euros per year between the Member States concerned for the period 2014-2020.

"We need to move that along with traditional products, fruits, vegetables, banana and milk-also include olive oil and table olives," the minister said.

This proposal is made in the context of the debate that the member countries have to unite into one program two existing initiatives: the free distribution of fruit and vegetables in schools and equivalent to milk. The first will be worth 150 million per year over the next seven years and the second with 80 million.

The goal of these two programs, which are being applied for several years, is to encourage smaller on the importance of a healthy and balanced diet and thus contribute to combat childhood obesity.
