Haneda and Narita   To improve the transport network
In 2020 the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will be held and a draft plan was compiled by the transport ministry’s expert panel.

The plan aims to improve the transport network and to raise the two airports to the level of Hong Kong, Singapore and Seoul in terms of the number of connected cities, according to the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry. The plan is part of the ministry’s efforts to boost the number of visitors from overseas to 20 million by 2020.

To boost the number of international routes served by the two airports, the government will support airports through such measures as encouraging them to build special terminals for low-cost carriers.

Air travel is not the only transport method the government will promote. The proposal advised the government to increase the number of foreign tourists traveling by cruise ship. It suggests urging such ship operators and others to increase the number of routes to Japan.
