Onions prices have touched sky-high rates in retail markets across India.

A government committee held a meeting, where it has been decided that a tender will be floated for the import of onions Saturday, a senior official said Friday.

"The committee has approved the offer for import of 1,000 tons of onion at $685 per ton," Indian Agriculture Additional Secretary Avinash K Srivastava told the media.

The imported onions would be supplied to state governments after seeking their requirements, the official said.
