According to data from the Russian Federal Statistics Service (Rosstat), fruit prices in Russia have increased by 30-50 percent over the past 12 months.
Food Almost 90% of the fruit consumed in Russia is imported
Meanwhile, apples, pears and bananas have become a third more expensive. The latter registered a 16.2 percent in September alone.
This situation is the result of the combination of two factors: the decline in the value of the rouble, which has lost 45 percent of its value against the dollar since the summer of 2014, and the introduction by the Kremlin of the embargo on food products from the European Union and the U.S.
Currently, Russia imports fruits and vegetables mainly from Ecuador, Turkey, Belarus, China and Egypt. According to data from the portal FruitNews, which monitors the fruit market, almost 90 percent of the fruit consumed in Russia is imported. ■
