Foreign tourists spend more than 20bn euros in Spain

The amount of money spent by foreign tourism in Spain from January to May 2014 rose by 9.1 percent year-on-year to more than 20 billion euros ($27 billion), the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism said.

According to the Ministry tourists from Germany, Britain and Nordic countries spent the largest amounts of money in the country.

The British spent about 4 billion euros in Spain, followed by the Germans and visitors from Nordic countries who spent more than 3 billion euros and more than 2 billion euros respectively in the first five months of the year.

The amount spent by the British increased by 12.3 percent when compared with the same period in 2013, while the amount spent by the Germans rose by 10.6 percent. Money spent by visitors from Nordic countries increased by 10.8 percent.

International visitors spent the largest amount of money in the archipelago of the Canary Islands, in which visitors can enjoy good weather during winter. They spent more than 5 billion euros there in the first five months of 2014, which meant a 15.2 percent more than a year ago.

The Canary Islands were followed by the northeastern region of Catalonia and the southern region of Andalusia where international visitors spent more than 4 billion euros and more than 3 billion euros respectively.
