Considerable increases for electric cars in Austria

A total of 252,178 new passenger cars was registered in January from January to September 2016, 6.3% more than in the reference period 2015 (January to September 2015: -0.1%), according to Statistics Austria.

In the first three quarters of 2016, January (+2.5%), February (+9.0%), March (+2.8%), April (+5.4%), May (+7.3%), June (+10.8%), August (+4.5%) and September (+14.9%) developed positively. In July, a minor decrease was recorded (-0.1% or -35 registrations).

From January to September 2016, the number of diesel driven passenger cars (share: 57.3%; +5.9%) as well as those with a petrol drive (share: 40.1%; +4.9%) showed increases.

The share of alternative drives – electric drive, natural gas, bivalent engine, hybrid drive and hydrogen (fuel cell) – was still comparatively low with a share of 2.6% or 6 581 units, but showed an increase of 53.1% (2015: +29.2%). The number of electric-driven passenger cars increased by +138.9%.

From January to September of 2016, the following of the Top 10 makes of new passenger cars reported increases: BMW (+22.7%), Renault (+14.3%), Mercedes (+13.9%), Ford (+12.2%), Seat (+10.6%), Audi (+8.6%), VW (+6.3%) and Opel (+2.1%). Decreases in new registrations were observed for Hyundai (-15.7%) and Skoda (-2.0%).

Within the Top 10 models of passenger cars, Opel Astra (+35.6%), VW Tiguan (+28.8%), VW Bus (+19.9%), Seat Ibiza (+15.4%), Fiat 500 (+13.7%), Skoda Octavia (+10.4%) and VW Polo (+2.4%) showed increases while Skoda Fabia (-15.8%), Renault Megane (-11.4%) and VW Golf (-10.7%) were on the decrease.
