“We estimate that Colombia will export roughly 500 million flowers, mainly to the United States, to meet demand during this season that accounts for roughly 12 percent of annual sales for the sector,” the Colombian Association of Flower Exporters president Augusto Solano Mejia said.

The holiday also creates some 18,000 temporary jobs in the Colombian flower industry, which employs more than 130,000 people year-round, he said.

“St. Valentine's Day 2016 will be celebrated on a Sunday and though historically it is not the best day for sales, we expect a favorable response from U.S. consumers,” Solano said.

“Colombia, with 80 percent of flower imports, dominates the market in the United States.”
