The regional government of Baden-Wuerttemberg will seek to overturn a court ruling which demanded the banning of diesel vehicles in the state capital of Stuttgart by 2018.

The Stuttgart Administrative Court had ruled in late July that only a complete ban on older diesel and petrol-powered vehicles from 2018 would suffice to meet European Union regulations on air pollution.

Stuttgart residents' right to a healthy environment hereby outweighed the property rights of vehicle owners.

Baden-Wuerttemberg is governed by a coalition of the green party (Gruene) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

While the CDU accepts the court verdict, green governor Winfried Kretschmann is pushing for a new assessment thereof which takes into account recently-agreed upon official measures to lower emissions levels.
