4G networks grew by 300% in Latin America during 2015

The number of 4G connections in Latin America soared 304 percent last year to 54 million lines, an executive of the 5G Americas trade association said.

During a breakfast with reporters, the association’s director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Jose Otero said the country with the highest penetration of 4G in 2015 was Uruguay, where the technology accounted for 48.9 percent of new mobile phones.

Uruguay was trailed by Chile, Peru and Brazil, while Otero said one of the countries where the number of terminals with 4G coverage grew fastest last year was Argentina.

The 5G Americas study found nearly 1,000 percent growth in the number of smartphones in Argentina to the point that, by the fourth quarter, 98 percent of new phones were smartphones, and seven out of 10 had 4G coverage.
