Uzbekistan closes borders, suspends public transport in capital city Tashkent

Uzbekistan is closing all border checkpoints from Monday and will only allow foreign citizens to leave the country in a series of new measures introduced to prevent the spread of coronavirus, authorities said Sunday.

The Uzbek government cancelled public transport in the capital city of Tashkent. It also ordered all companies to switch to remote work and send some of their employees on mandatory leave.

However, authorities said that food markets, shops and pharmacies will continue to work as normal.

The Uzbek government will make wearing masks in public places mandatory. Those without masks will be fined 22 U.S. dollars for the first time and 67 U.S. dollars for repeated offence.

There have been 43 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Uzbekistan as of Sunday.
