Criminal Code   Serious crimes against minors in the country

The Ukrainian parliament adopted legislative amendments to increase the punishment for sexual crimes against minors, including a longer term in jail and chemical castration.

Under the new law, those who rape minors will be subject to 10 to 15 years in jail plus compulsory chemical castration.

The parliament adopted an additional article of the Criminal Code to define chemical castration as a forced intake of antiandrogenic drugs to a convict, but it would not apply to offenders aged under 18 and over 65.

In addition, criminal liability for crimes of a sexual nature against minors has been raised to 7 to 15 years in prison from the previous maximum sentence of 12 years, plus a lifelong administrative oversight of police.

The heavier punishments for sex crimes against minors were a reaction by the Ukrainian government to an increased number of serious crimes against minors in the country.
