The U.S. Coast Guard called off the search at 11:02 a.m., nearly a day after the unidentified man jumped from the "Anthem of the Seas" ship as it was heading to Bayonne, Point Pleasant Patch reported.

The man jumped off the Royal Caribbean ship at 3:30 p.m. Friday when the cruise liner was 65 miles off Chincoteague, Va., said Petty Officer Andrew Kendrick, a spokesman for the Coast Guard.

The man's motive was not clear, Kendrick said. The ship was on its way back from the Bahamas and was set to dock in Bayonne , Kendrick said.

The U.S. Navy as well as a Coast Guard airplane, helicopter and cutter boat searched for the man.

Kendrick said there was little chance of the man's survival given the distance from the shore, as well as the cold temperature of the water.
