Pezao was arrested in his house by the Federal Police, and is being accused of corruption and money laundering. According to the authorities, the governor received hefty bribes for years.

Pezao's arrest was based on the testimony of Carlos Miranda, a former adviser to Pezao's predecessor Sergio Cabral, who was Pezao's superior between 2007 and 2014.

According to Miranda, Pezao received 150,000 reals (about 38,840 U.S. dollars) per month as bribe with an extra 150,000 reals as end-of-year bonus, and two larger bonuses of 1 million reals (about 259,070 U.S. dollars) each. The money was paid by private companies which held contracts with the state government.

The Federal Police is still searching for the money but has not disclosed other advantages Pezao reportedly got from the scheme.

Pezao is the fourth Rio state governor to be arrested, and the first to be arrested in office. In fact, all governors elected from 1998 to 2014 in the state have been arrested for corruption crimes at some point.
