It confirmed that Rio de Janeiro continues to be the most popular destination in South America.

While the position in the ranking remained, the number of visitors saw a slight decrease: from 2.3 million in the 2016 survey to 2.253 million this year.

Just like last year, Rio continues to be the only Brazilian city in the list of the world's 100 most sought-after destinations. The only two other South American cities in the ranking were Buenos Aires and Lima.

Concerns with zika and safety were pointed out by Euromonitor as the main reasons that led Rio to drop five positions in a year (from 88th to 93rd).

Embratur president (the Brazilian Tourism Institute), Vinicius Lummertz, believes that the movement that has united the three levels of government (federal, state and municipal) and the private sector around these issues will generate results, and that Rio is likely to see an upturn in visitors again.

One of the main actions he highlighted is the calendar of upcoming events in the city, which Brazil is taking the opportunity to promote to major players of the tourism sector, the press and the public in general this week during the WTM in London.
