The storm also caused damage to parts of the main island, Oahu. The state's Red Cross is busy delivering emergency aid to people, while rescue and recovery efforts continue, with some people being evacuated, Radio NZ reported.

Record flash flooding and severe thunderstorms over the weekend turned roads to waterways and triggered mudslides, cut power and water services and, in some cases, blocked access to emergency shelters.

Red Cross Hawaii CEO Coralie Matayoshi says many people were caught by surprise.

She told Sara Vui-Talitu that they are providing vital medical aid with volunteers helping out at shelters.
