Puerto Rico's office of emergency management confirmed that 100 percent of the U.S. territory had lost power, noting that anyone with electricity was using a generator.

President Donald Trump said Puerto Rico, a US territory, had been "absolutely obliterated" and was in "very, very, very tough shape".

Trump declared a major disaster, making federal government funds available, and said he would be visiting soon.

He said the recovery would start with "great gusto".

Communities across Puerto Rico remained isolated and without communication.

Governor Ricardo Rossello said it may take months to restore power, and he issued a nightly curfew amid widespread warnings of flash floods and landslides.
