Portugal: More than 213,000 hectares burned in 8 months

During the first eight months of 2017, Portugal reported 12,377 forest fires and smaller events that devastated more than 213,000 hectares.

According to the Institute for Conservation of Nature and Forests, although the number of fires is similar to the average of the last ten years, the burned area is 234 percent higher than in recent years.

Out of the total hectares damaged, 20,881 hectares are included in protected areas, such as the Natural Monument of Portas de Rodao.

According to the report, the most damaged districts are Castelo Branco, Porto, Santarem and Coimbra.

Meanwhile, the National Civil Protection Authority issued an alert for 66 days during the period, 28 days in August, when an unprecedented number of fires was reported (3,921).

Investigations into the cause of the fires led to the arrest of more than 80 people, a number higher than that of 2016.
