The number of irregular immigrants arriving in Italy this year has risen to 60,000, after being rescued in the Mediterranean Sea, the UN Refugee Agency reported.

Nigeria (8,120), Bangladesh (7,567) and Guinea (6,144) are the main nations of origin, even though, as it is traditional, nearly all migrants left Libya on fragile vessels as part of operations organized by human traffickers operating in that North African nation. ■
