Out of gauge collision probe between freight and passenger train, New South Wales, underway

Australian Transportation Safety Bureau is investigating the out of gauge collision between Pacific National freight train and NSW Trains passenger service C181 at Loftus, NSW, on 21 July 2020.

At the time of the occurrence, C181, was travelling in the down direction through Loftus Station, 3WB3 was stationary.

NSW Trains service C181 collided with an out of gauge component from the side of a Pacific Nation Freight locomotive pulling consist 3WB3.

The front of the passenger train, driver’s compartment door and passenger door of the lead carriage of C181 suffered impact damage from the open engine compartment filter panel of 3WB3. 3WB3 was the third locomotive of the consist.

There were no reported injuries to staff or members of the public.
