Two of the injured employees are in critical condition. The company processes cashew and macadamia nuts and fruits for export.

A company spokesperson told the Daily Nation that a cashew nut boiler blew up as a result of a power surge, shortly after Kenya Power engineers had carried out repair works on the company's main power line.

At least 400 people were at the facility at the time of the explosion.

The company is owned by Thika MP Patrick Wainaina.
