A leak at a gas pipeline just north of Mexico City has led authorities to evacuate about 2,000 people.

The leak sent plumes of gas dozens of meters into the air and into the surrounding fields.

The civil defence office in the State of Mexico said emergency personnel were pumping water toward the fields Friday to reduce the possibility of chance combustion.

The leak also forced temporary suspension of train service on tracks near the pipeline.

Local media reported the leak was caused by a clumsily drilled illegal tap by fuel thieves.
