Mayor of Alijó, Portugal declares state of municipal emergency due to fire

The mayor of Alijó in the north of Portugal, has declared a state of municipal emergency after a fire that has been raging since the early hours of Sunday has become “out of control”.

Carlos Magalhães launched the appeal saying the region needs help because the blaze cannot be controlled as the men and women there fighting it are exhausted.

The mayor said he had asked for more aircraft to fight the fire as only aircraft can get in there.

He told reporters that almost the entire area, to the north, west and east of Alijó was up in flames, and so far only the south had been saved.
