Magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolts eastern Taiwan, 5.4 hits Kazakhstan

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake rocked Hualien in eastern Taiwan at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The quake was centered about 27.8 kilometers southwest of Hualien County Hall in Shoufeng Township and struck at a depth of 5 km, the bureau's Seismology Center said.

The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Hualien County, where it measured 5 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake's intensity measured 2 in Nantou County, Taitung County and Taichung.

Following the earthquake, two other temblors of magnitude of 3.2 and 3.3, respectively, shook Hualien, the weather bureau said.

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit Kazakhstan's Almaty Region on Sunday, a representative from the country's interior ministry told Sputnik.

"The earthquake's energy class was 12.8, magnitude — 5.4, depth — 5 kilometres [3.1 miles]", the representative said.

The earthquake occurred at 5:07 a.m. (23:00 GMT) and the epicentre was 145 kilometres northeast of the country's largest city Almaty.
