A tree planted by French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Donald Trump as a token of the friendship between their two countries has died, AFP reported.
America Friendship tree has gone forever
After a very public bromance between the U.S. and French presidents, the relationship subsequently soured amid disagreements over Iran and NATO, among other issues.
French media reported this week that the tree, taken from a forest in the north of France where over 2,000 U.S. marines died during the first world war, was never replanted after being taken out of the ground soon after Macron’s visit.
At the time, French Ambassador to the U.S. Gérard Araud said it was put into quarantine, “which is mandatory for any living organism imported into the US.,” but that it would be replanted later.
In fact, the tree died in quarantine, according to AFP. ■
