The Ukrainian authorities have completely suspended electricity supplies to the area in eastern part of the country controlled by pro-independence insurgents, a senior Ukrainian energy official said.

The electricity flows to the insurgent-controlled territories in Donetsk region were ceased on midnight Wednesday, Kovalchuk said, without giving a reason for the blackout.
While commenting on the move, the rebel authorities of Donetsk region said that the cut-off will not affect consumers as two local power plants produce enough electricity to cover the needs of people.
The electricity supplies to the rebel-held areas in Lugansk region have been halted since April over non-payment. ■
