India successfully tests anti-satellite missile

India on Wednesday has shot down a satellite 300-kilometer away in space in low-earth orbit with a missile, thus joining the United States, Russia and China, a select group of countries that have such military capability.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the initiative is purely geared to defending the country.

Modi said that the so-called Mission Shakti shows the remarkable skill of the Indian scientists and the success of the Indian space program.

'This operation will make India stronger, safer and promote peace and harmony,' he said.

Meanwhile, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu congratulated Indian space scientists and posted on Twitter that with the successful launch of an anti-satellite missile, the country has emerged as a space superpower in the world.

Mission Shakti Operation by the Defence Research and Development Organization and the Indian Space Research Organization makes this country one of the few States that possess this military technology.
