A statement by Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa said initial indications pointed to a possible electrical fault exacerbated by combustible gases.

The ANA agency said the blast severely damaged the plant and concrete blocks forming the foundation of the silo were ripped up and thrown some distance from the storage facility.

President Mnangagwa said an investigation was under way to gain a full picture of the causes of the incident and ordered all silos in Zimbabwe to perform safety inspections and carry out maintenance work to prevent similar incidents.

The Grain Marketing Board’s depot in Lion’s Den is the biggest grain storage facility in Zimbabwe.
