December is commencing on a volatile note across eastern Australia with flooding rain and powerful thunderstorms expected into the early week.

A potent storm clashing with warm and humid air will continue to cause thunderstorms to rumble across northeast New South Wales and Queensland through Monday.

Residents should prepare for disruptions to travel and outdoor activities. The strongest thunderstorms may be capable of causing damage.

The same storm system prompted officials to cancel the Taste of Melbourne sessions from Friday to Sunday.

Train service was affected in Victoria, while stretches of highway were closed for a time, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

The focus of heavy rain and thunderstorms will move into eastern Queensland and northeast New South Wales on Monday.
