An Edinburgh flight set for Lanzarote was forced to divert this morning after a bird strike.

The TUI BY1454 was set to arrive in the Canary island at 10.45am local time. But it was forced to land in Glasgow after a bird hit the aircraft. Holidaymakers remain grounded, but the flight was expected to depart soon.

Flight tracker Radar Box showed the Boeing 737 aircraft turning back to the city at around 6.25am.

A spokeswoman for TUI said: "We would like to apologise to customers on board flight TOM1454 from Edinburgh to Lanzarote this morning, which diverted to Glasgow due to the aircraft suffering a bird strike.

"Customers have been provided with refreshment vouchers and the flight is due to depart soon.

"We understand how frustrating delays can be and we would like to thank customers for their patience.

"The safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew is our highest priority."
