Local media indicated that given the constant rainfall in this region, located some 350 kilometers east from Havana, the population in 11 communities of the municipalities of Yaguajay, Taguasco, La Sierpe and Sancti Spíritus are currently evacuated.

According to the newspaper Escambray, the Provincial Defense Council (CDP) which is on alert since early this month due to the hurricane Irma, started the movement of families evacuated in the middle of this week in the community of Yaguey, municipality of Yaguajay, and in the rest of the municipalities since Thursday.

Mileydi Pelaez, head of the CDP Evacuation Commission, said that this decision was taken in those communities settled near dams or rivers, as well as those located in low lands, because if rainfall continues they might remain flooded.

Sancti Spiritus province, located in the central region of Cuba, has the largest dams in the country, being the Zaza dam the largest which opened sluice-gates on Tuesday to reduce water levels.
