A statement from his office cited by local media gave no official reason for the cancellation, but media speculated that he would use the time to try and save his job.

Attorney General Rodrigo Janot on Monday charged Temer with accepting bribes from JBS, the world's largest meat-packing company, in return for his intercession in its favour at the country's competition regulator, the CADE.

Earlier on Wednesday the Supreme Court approved the charges against the president, but the lower house of parliament must now take a vote on whether to try him.
