Berlin to send migrants back to Spain

Berlin and Madrid have reached a bilateral agreement to send some migrants arriving in Germany back to Spain, a spokeswoman for the German Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

The government of Chancellor Angela Merkel has been seeking such agreements with fellow members of the EU in order to avoid unilateral decisions to reject migrants at Germany's borders.

The bloc's so-called Dublin rules stipulate that migrants must be sent back to the EU member state they initially registered in. Those rules were suspended as a result of a major refugee crisis in 2015 and 2016.
